The PerosLab is dedicated to paleoenvironmental research and environmental archeology from the end of the last Ice Age 20,000 years ago to the present. Key areas of research include identifying the patterns and drivers of climate change over various timescales, determining the constraints or opportunities that natural environments provide for cultural and biological change, examining vegetation and climate dynamics, and analyzing how humans have impacted the natural environment. This research is undertaken using various techniques including the primary collection of paleoenvironmental data (mostly from sediment cores, but also tree rings and speleothems), alongside data synthesis and analysis. The main proxy indictor we work with is pollen analysis, but through our numerous collaborations with researchers and laboratories worldwide we also utilize geochemical and sedimentological clues to help us answer fundamental questions concerning the Earth system and the role of humans within it.
